However, <b>no one under 18</b> is permitted in the Read-Aloud program, but we have other opportunities for kids to help.<br> <br> Contact the <a href="mailto:volunteer@reachreads.org">Volunteer Coordinator</a> to plan training for you or for your corporate team at 757-627-4722.<br><br> <b><u>READ ALOUD SHELTER VOLUNTEER</u></b> (Remember, please leave your kids at home).<br> REACH uses a team approach to reading: you will be assigned to a team that will take responsibility for one specific night each month. REACH reads at twelve shelters, three different nights each week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays). Each team will have a captain who will coordinate the schedule for the team responsiblities for choosing & reading the books and for the activity on your designated night. The team captain will be the Point-of-Contact for the Volunteer Coordinator and will disseminate information from the REACH office to the team. We ask for a commitment of one session per month for each team, for at least six months.<br> <br> <span class="style1">If you are interested in being a volunteer, please call the REACH office at 757-627-4722 to find out when our next training will take place and to RSVP. </span><br> </p> <p align="Left" style="font-size: 14px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0;">Each volunteer must complete a CPS background check and that requires a $7 fee. Please bring that with you when you attend the training. We accept cash, Money Orders or a check made out to REACH. You will need to have the CPS Background Check form notarized, which can be done at your bank, but we will try to have a notary on-site when you come for the training..<br> <br> REMEMBER, Please do not bring your children to the training nor to the read aloud sessions. It violates our shelter agreements and it is a matter of great discomfort for the kids in the shelter. Thanks for your understanding.<br></p> <p align="center" style="font-size: 18px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; margin-top: 0;"><u>Other Volunteer Opportunities</u></p> <p align="Left" style="font-size: 14px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">REACH provides a number of other opportunities to volunteer. Here are a few:<br><br> <b><u>Book Runner:</u></b> Drop the kids off at school and swing by our office and pick-up and deliver books to the shelters, or retreive books from one of our distributers. It takes a few hours and is an huge help to our very small staff of two.<br> <br> <b><u>FestEvents Beverage Booth:</u></b> Each year REACH is given an opportunity to participate with FestEvents' working a beverage tent. This is a blast for our volunteers and a great way for REACH to make tip money and spread the word about our mission. Volunteers must be at least 21 and will help manage a beverage tent for a portion the day.<br><br> <b><u>Administrative Volunteers:</u></b> We are always in need of support in the office. Projects include sorting and arranging books, doing inventory and other general office duties. Volunteers of <b>all ages</b> may participate in this opportunity.<br><br> <b><u>Corporate Volunteerism</u></b><br> Several companies already have teams participating in our shelter read-aloud programs. Those include: Navy Federal Credit Union, GEICO, Booz Allen Hamilton, Chubb Insurance, CACI and The Virginian Pilot. If a number of volunteers from the same company want to participate together we will place you an a team together. We will come to you for training onsite.<br><br> <b><u>Military, Civic Groups or Faith Organizations</u></b><br> Many military commands and organizations are looking for programs that can be done without taking time away from the workplace. This is a great program for groups to Team Build and Leadership Train while helping our worthy cause. If a number of volunteers from the same command or organizations want to participate together, we will place you on a team together.
